City of Mt. Pleasant—Borden Building Restoration Project

Borden Building Restoration Project

The Borden Building was the home of Borden's Condensed Milk (Michigc Condensed Milk Factory) from 1907 to 1960. After being vacant for 48 years, an with many renovation plans being suggested and discarded, the Borden Buildin Restoration Project began in August 2007 and was completed in October of 2008.

The Building is on the National Register of Historic Places because of it's unique architectural design. However, the cleanup of environmental contamination on the site (lea
d, asbestos, unidentified liquids in buried tanks) was a large pari the project.

Structural instability prevented the water tower and chimney from being preserved. The original 223 windows and 8 cupolas were restored to historic standards and the building now is the home of the Mt. Pleasant City Hall.
