The Michigan Plaque Award:
Detroit Edison River Rouge Power Plant Shoreline Naturalization Project
Plant employees restored a section of the Detroit River shoreline to natural conditions, creating a habitat for fish and other wildlife species, demonstrating "softshore engineering" techniques and educating the public about the project. They partnered with DTE Energy, City of River Rouge, Friends of the Detroit River, Metropolitan Affairs Coalition, Michigan Sea Grant, Nativescape, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and the Wildlife Habitat Council. The project took a barren shoreline covered with concrete rip rap and gravel and turned it into a beautiful shoreline, adjacent to a public park, which is now home to native plants and is a natural habitat for area animals.
