The Michigan Plaque Award:
Recycle Here!, Detroit—Grass-Roots Mobile Anti—Litter Campaign
Recycle Here! was formed to address the lack of a municipal recycling program in the City of Detroit. Using a community-based, grass roots approach, Recycle Here! coordinated with established community organizations, allowing the program to gain momentum and grow. Currently, Recycle Here! utilizes 10 mobile community drop offs and a main facility, along with supporting a recycling education program in 32 public schools. Recycle Here! provides residents with not only typical recycling option, but also proper disposal of batteries, ink cartridges and electronics. Public response has been enormous; even the main facility, once abandoned, has become a symbol for green energy, blight reduction and hope for the future
