Men's Garden Club of Grosse Pointe Seedling Program
Ed Haug—Tomato Plant Seedling Program<
The Men's Garden Club of Grosse Pointe is a group of men who love to garden and share the joy of gardening. About 20 years ago former BCSEM Individual Service Award winner Harold Lee and several other club members instituted a tomato seedling planting program in area elementary schools. Each spring three or four area schools are targeted and second grade classes participate in the program. The children progress from information about seed development and planting to the exciting germination process. In about 2 weeks, the men return to repot the plants into larger individual containers. Then in May, the children take the growing plants home to put into their own gardens to continue growth and eventually produce tomatoes. It is a great experience for the students and the men of the garden club!
